As Methodists, our theology is Wesleyan. That simply means that we interpret Holy Scripture in light of the teachings of John Wesley, one of the founders of Methodism. In turn, Wesley's own theology relied heavily upon first and foremost Holy Scripture with influences coming from the writings of the early church, the theology of the Anglican Church, the Puritans, the German Pietists such as the Moravians, Calvin, Luther, and Roman Catholic and Eastern Orthodox mystics, thinkers, and theologians. In short, Wesley wanted to return to the “old religion” of the Bible and sought understanding from all who sought the Truth with their whole heart, mind, and soul regardless of creed or nationality.
Here in the Global Methodist Church, we desire revival and renewal of Wesley’s vision for the people called Methodists. We pray to return to that “old religion”, the religion of the Bible, the Way that Christians have been following for the last 2000 years.
A catechism is a collection of teachings. The Catechism of the Global Methodist Church is a list of 77 statements in the form of question/response that aim to teach the seeker about our faith. The first half of the Catechism reviews the earliest universally accepted statement of the belief of the Christian Church, the Nicene Creed. This creed was originally written and adopted at the First Council of Nicaea in 325 AD and its goal and aim was to capture the basic tenets of the Christian faith. The second half of the Catechism deals more directly with those teachings which are uniquely Wesleyan in nature and distinguish Methodists from other Christian denominations.
